AI for higher education: student service, knowledge and governance
Universities are asking the same questions as every large organisation, with the added weight of academic integrity, research governance and a student body that already uses AI daily. The group has delivered web and digital work for the University of York and York St John University; our AI consultancy is offered to the sector on the same honest terms as everywhere else.
Where AI is going in the sector
Higher education has three AI conversations at once: how students and staff use it, how the institution governs it, and where it can take administrative load off stretched professional services. The practical opportunities sit mostly in the third: student-service assistants grounded in regulations, policies and timetables, with disclosure and handover; knowledge assistants over the institution's own policies and procedures; research-administration and grant documentation support; and governed access to enterprise tools with the AI-literacy training that regulation and good practice now expect.
We do not claim AI experience in the sector. What we offer is a leadership awareness session tailored to higher education as the first step, and the Converge Methodology to decide where value and readiness meet.
Where we look first
The opportunities we have scoped or delivered in this sector, or that the frameworks apply to directly. Which are ready depends on your data, which is the first thing we check.
Student-service assistants
Admissions, registry, timetabling and support queries grounded in regulations and policies, with disclosure and escalation.
Knowledge assistants for staff
One place to ask across policies, procedures and institutional memory, with citations and access control.
Research administration
Grant and compliance documentation support, with a person approving.
Governed access and AI literacy
Enterprise tools on no-training terms, a usage policy, and literacy programmes for staff and leadership.
Governance and academic integrity
Risk classification, transparency and oversight for institutional AI use, separate from the pedagogical questions the academic community owns.
Who we have worked with
The group has delivered web and digital work for the University of York and York St John University, and Agency51 works with Raspberry Pi.
We cite this as group experience. Where we have delivered AI for a client, the case study says so; where we have not, we do not imply it.
What the sector needs from AI governance
Student and staff data under data-protection law; academic integrity and the institution's own policies; research governance and funder requirements; and the EU AI Act's rules for any system affecting access to education, which is a high-risk category.
About AI in higher education
Have you delivered AI for a university?
No, and this page says so. Our university work is web and digital; our AI consultancy work is in manufacturing, publishing and agencies. The awareness session and discovery method transfer, and we would rather earn the sector reference than imply it.
Where would a university start?
A leadership awareness session, then discovery across professional-services functions, where the administrative opportunities are most ready.
Does the EU AI Act apply to UK universities?
Where systems affect EU students or operate in the EU, yes, and admissions and assessment systems fall into the high-risk category. UK guidance points the same way.

A leadership awareness session tailored to your sector is the first step; discovery is the second.
